Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making your website easier to find in search results for the things your customers are looking for. When it's done well, it brings a steady flow of visitors who already want what you offer — without paying for every click. Here's how it works, in plain language.
How search engines work
Search engines like Google do three things:
- Crawl — automated programs follow links across the web and discover pages.
- Index — the pages they find are analysed and stored in a huge database.
- Rank — when someone searches, the engine picks the pages it thinks best answer the query and orders them.
SEO is about making sure your pages can be crawled and indexed, and that they're the best answer for the searches you care about.
The three parts of SEO
Technical SEO
This is the foundation. If search engines can't access or understand your site, nothing else matters. Technical SEO covers:
- Fast loading on mobile and desktop
- A secure (HTTPS) site
- A clear site structure and internal links
- An XML sitemap and a correct robots.txt file
- No broken pages, duplicate content or redirect chains
On-page SEO
This is about each page's content and how it's presented:
- A unique, descriptive title tag and meta description
- One clear main heading and logical subheadings
- Content that fully answers the searcher's question
- Descriptive image alt text and compressed images
- Links to related pages on your own site
Off-page SEO
Search engines treat links from other reputable websites as votes of confidence. Off-page SEO includes earning those links through useful content, partnerships, PR and directory listings — and, for local businesses, a complete Google Business Profile with genuine reviews.
Keywords: matching what people search
Keyword research tells you the words people use when looking for your products or services, how often they're searched and how competitive they are. Good SEO maps each important search to the page best placed to answer it. Instead of chasing one broad term like "web development", target specific phrases such as "web development company in Gurugram" where the intent is clear and you can realistically rank.
Why SEO matters
- It's always on. Once a page ranks, it keeps bringing visitors without paying per click.
- It reaches people with intent. Searchers are actively looking for a solution.
- It builds trust. Many people trust organic results more than ads.
- It compounds. Each piece of quality content adds to your site's authority over time.
How long does SEO take?
SEO is a long-term investment. Technical fixes can show results within weeks, but ranking for competitive terms usually takes several months of consistent work. That's why many businesses run PPC ads for immediate traffic while SEO builds.
