A strong social media presence helps a business stay visible, build trust and bring people back to its website. But posting whenever there's time rarely works. The businesses that get results treat social media as a channel with goals, a plan and regular measurement. Here are the strategies we use with our clients.
1. Start with a clear goal
Decide what social media should do for you before you post anything. Common goals are:
- Awareness — getting your brand in front of new people
- Traffic — sending visitors to your website or store
- Leads — collecting enquiries or sign-ups
- Retention — keeping existing customers engaged
Each goal changes what you post and how you measure success. A lead-generation goal needs strong calls to action and landing pages; an awareness goal needs shareable content and reach.
2. Choose platforms where your customers already are
You don't need to be everywhere. A B2B services firm will usually get more from LinkedIn than from Pinterest; a fashion or food brand will usually do better on Instagram. Look at where your customers spend time, where competitors get engagement, and how much content you can realistically produce. Two well-run platforms beat five neglected ones.
3. Plan content with a calendar
A content calendar keeps posting consistent and stops last-minute scrambling. A simple mix that works for most businesses:
- Educational posts that answer common customer questions
- Behind-the-scenes content that shows your team and process
- Social proof such as client results, reviews and case studies
- Offers and announcements, used sparingly so they still stand out
Plan a month at a time, leave room for timely posts, and reuse your best content in different formats — a blog post can become a carousel, a short video and a quote graphic.
4. Make every post easy to engage with
Social platforms reward posts that people interact with. Ask questions, use polls, reply to every comment and respond to messages quickly. Short videos and carousels usually reach more people than single images. Use a small set of relevant hashtags rather than long lists.
5. Use paid ads to reach the right people
Organic reach on most platforms is limited. A modest ad budget lets you reach people by location, interests, job title or past behaviour on your website. Start with:
- Retargeting people who visited your site but didn't enquire
- Lookalike audiences based on your existing customers
- Lead forms that let people enquire without leaving the app
Install the platform pixel on your website first so you can see which ads lead to real enquiries and sales.
6. Work with creators where it fits
Partnering with creators who have a loyal audience in your niche can build trust faster than ads. Smaller creators often have more engaged followers and are more affordable. Agree on clear deliverables and track results with unique links or codes.
7. Measure what matters and adjust
Likes and follower counts are easy to track but rarely tell you whether social media is working. Focus on:
- Clicks to your website
- Enquiries, sign-ups or sales from social traffic
- Engagement rate on each type of post
- Cost per lead or sale for paid campaigns
Review results monthly, do more of what works and drop what doesn't.
