Ranking well in search results brings a steady stream of potential customers to your website. But publishing random blog posts rarely gets you there. A content strategy — a plan for what to publish, for whom and why — is what turns content into traffic and traffic into customers. Here's how to build one in three stages: attract, engage, convert.
Before you start: know your audience
List the types of customers you serve, the problems they're trying to solve and the questions they ask before buying. Talk to your sales and support teams — they hear these questions every day. Each question is a potential piece of content.
Stage 1: Attract
Research keywords
Use tools like Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner or paid SEO tools to find the phrases people search for around your topics. Look at:
- Search volume — how many people search for it
- Difficulty — how hard it will be to rank
- Intent — whether the searcher wants information, a comparison or to buy
Group topics into clusters
Instead of isolated posts, create a pillar page covering a broad topic in depth (for example, "Mobile app development") and several cluster posts answering specific questions ("How much does an app cost?", "Flutter vs native"). Link them together. This structure helps search engines see your site as an authority on the topic.
Plan a realistic calendar
Consistency beats volume. Two well-researched articles a month published reliably will do more than ten rushed ones followed by silence.
Stage 2: Engage
Write for people first
Answer the question quickly, then go deeper. Use clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and examples. Avoid jargon unless your audience uses it.
Optimise every page
- Put the main keyword in the title, the first paragraph and at least one subheading — naturally
- Write a compelling meta description that encourages clicks
- Add descriptive alt text to images
- Link to related articles and service pages
Show expertise
Search engines and readers both value content written from real experience. Share examples from your own projects, practical tips and clear opinions.
Stage 3: Convert
Add relevant calls to action
Every article should offer a natural next step: a related service page, a free consultation, a downloadable checklist or a newsletter sign-up. Match the offer to the reader's stage — someone reading "What is SEO?" isn't ready for a contract, but might download a checklist.
Make enquiry easy
Make sure contact options are visible and forms are short. Track which articles lead to enquiries.
Measure and improve
Review performance every month: rankings, organic traffic, time on page and conversions. Update older articles that are slipping, expand those that are close to page one, and merge thin posts that compete with each other.
